Riparian areas, also called buffers, are found adjacent to streams, lakes, and other surface waters. They are characterized by variable soils and hydrology, frequent flooding, and highly productive plant and animal communities. Through the interaction of their soils, hydrology, and biotic communities, riparian buffers maintain many important ecological functions, which in turn, provide important benefits to humans.

Borrowed from the USDA’s National Agroforestry Center’s publication Working Trees for Water Quality.  First edition 2004.
